[January 10, 2018]    Former Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine is set to be named defensive coordinator the Green Bay Packers.

Based on multiple reports, Pettine agreed to a contract and will replace Dom Capers after an extensive search by head coach Mike McCarthy that included former Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley and Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.

Bradley reportedly signed a new contract to remain defensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Chargers on Tuesday, and Fangio, whose contract expired on Jan. 8, could be retained in Chicago by new head coach Matt Nagy.

Pettine worked as a consultant for the Seattle Seahawks last season.

The 51-year-old rose to prominence with a smashmouth 3-4 defense under Rex Ryan as coordinator of the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills. From there he became coach of the Browns, posting a 10-22 record.

The Packers fired Capers after a 7-9 season ended with Green Bay ranked 22nd in total defense and 26th in points allowed.

Capers also ran a 3-4 scheme and was a former head coach (Carolina Panthers, Houston Texans) when McCarthy hired him in 2009.

Pettine served as the defensive coordinator for the Jets from 2009-2012 and the Bills in 2013 and was the head coach of the Cleveland Browns in 2014 and 2015.
