Lincoln College freshman swimmer Colleen Ferguson has had an outstanding season so far for the Lynx. Her achievements in the water have earned her national recognition as she has been named NJCAA Swimmer of the Week by the prestigious national swimming web site CollegeSwimming. com.

Ferguson, a native of the Marshal Islands, has been a strong competitor for LC in backstroke and freestyle events as well as the 100 yard Individual Medley (IM). So far this season she has broken the school record for her times in the 50 yard backstroke and the 100 yard IM.

LC Swim Coach Jonathan Jordan believes it was her recent standout performance at the Lewis University Invite that earned her the attention of CollegeSwimming.com.

“Colleen was able to win both the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events competing for a junior college team against Lewis swimmers who are among the top athletes at the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) DII level, made the victories all the more impressive,” said Jordan.

Coach Jordan has been impressed by Ferguson since she joined the program this year. “Colleen is hard worker and a wonderful athlete,” he said. “She is certainly deserving of this honor. I would not be surprised if she were to be named Swimmer of the Week again before the season ends. She has the potential to break more school records and should place well at Nationals,” he added.

Ferguson was recruited to come to Lincoln College after Coach Jordan saw her compete at several international events including the most recent Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

According to Ferguson, competing at the Olympics was a thrilling experience. “It was incredible to be able to represent the Marshal Islands in Rio,” she said. “I competed in the 50 freestyle and even won my first heat. It was a fantastic experience to get to train with the world’s best and it definitely has me focused on returning to compete in Tokyo in 2020.”

Colleen Ferguson is a Sports Management major at Lincoln College and is a recipient of a scholarship from the Oceana National Olympic Committee (ONOC) scholarship program. She says she selected LC because of the connection she had with Coach Jordan, but also because of the atmosphere she found on campus. “Lincoln has been a great experience for me because I am from a small island community so the size of the campus makes it feel like home,” she said.
