[June 13, 2018]  The Pigs and Swigs Festival for the past several years has been a two-sided event with barbecue competitions one major component and craft beers the other.

This year, the Swigs side of the event promises to be bigger and better than ever with several craft beer brewers, and new this year, a number of wineries on hand starting on Friday. The beer garden opens at 11 a.m. and runs to 4 p.m.

Be advised this is a 21 and older event. Children are not allowed inside the beer garden, and ID-checks are mandatory, so be sure to bring that driver’s license or state ID card.

At 6 p.m. on Friday evening there will be a tasting event for craft beers as well as local wines.

On Friday evening there will also be a VIP event beginning at 5 p.m. The cost of the VIP is $30 and includes the entrance/cover charge, 10 sample beer tickets, a souvenir tasting glass and a special food pairing event.

The food paring event is sponsored by Farnsworth Group, Spirited Republic, Flossie and Delzena’s, and Guest House.

Each attendee will have the opportunity to sample four food samples, expertly paired with a craft beer selection.

There are currently 11 breweries and wineries registered to be on hand on Friday and Saturday. Look for Riggs Beer Company, White Oak Brewing, Triptych Brewing Destihl Brewery, Hand of Fate Brewing Company, Limerick Brewing Company, Tangled Roots Brewing Company, Evil Horse, Hill Prairie Winery, Lincoln Heritage Winery, and Wyldewood Cellars.

The official Draft Van Provider will be Lakeshore Beverage.

Also look for live entertainment in the Swigs area starting at 5 p.m. with local vocalist Lesleigh Bennet and at 8 p.m. enjoy the very talented PowerPlay Band sponsored by Jim Xamis Ford.

Saturday

On Saturday morning take part in a Bags Tournament starting at 11 a.m. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. entry into the Swigs area will be free, but ID’s will still be checked, so be sure to come prepared. Brews available during that time will be from the Draft Van only.

At 11 a.m. the Homebrew competition begins. Sponsored by Heritage Packaging, this event is for anyone and everyone who has dabbled in the fine art of home brewing. Whether you are a beginner or have been making your own craft beers for quite some time, this is a perfect opportunity to put your brew up against those of your friends and neighbors and let the judges decide just who has found that winning combination.

Each entrant may enter no more than four beers. Two bottles of beer must be submitted with each entry and can contain no markings, logos or other identifiers. As with the Pigs judging, this is a blind event with each entrant being given a number and results recorded at the end of the judging according to that number.

All bottles must be brown or green and 10 to 16 ounces. Competition categories include IPA, Stout/Porter, Brown/Amber, Wheat, Pilsner, or Miscellaneous. The beers will all be judged against one another by a team of five judges. Judging will conclude at approximately 4 p.m. with the announcement of winners taking place soon after.

At 4 p.m. on Saturday tasting events for craft beer and also wine will be opened in the beer garden. The evening includes live entertainment starting with the tropical vibes of local band Toocan at 4 p.m. followed by a mix of some more fun music provided by Tennessee Borderline beginning at 8 p.m.
