Major League Baseball notebook: Diamondbacks' Miller returns to majors

[June 26, 2018]  Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Shelby Miller was activated from the disabled list to start Monday against the Miami Marlins after missing over a year rehabilitating from Tommy John surgery.

Miller, 27, rejoined his D-backs teammates last Thursday before Arizona's game against the Pirates and was activated from the 60-day disabled list on Monday. In a corresponding move, Arizona placed right-hander Clay Buchholz on the 10-day disabled with a left oblique strain.

Miller went 2-2 with a 4.09 ERA in four starts last season before sustaining a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow. He underwent season-ending surgery on May 10.

Miller is in his third season with the Diamondbacks. He went 3-12 with a 6.15 ERA in 20 starts in 2016.

--Catcher Gary Sanchez was placed on the disabled list by the New York Yankees with what the team labeled a right groin strain.

Sanchez is expected to miss three to four weeks as a result of the injury.

Sanchez, who has 14 home runs and 41 RBIs but is hitting just .190 this season after going 0-for-4 on Sunday, was hurt when he tried unsuccessfully to beat the throw to first on his double-play grounder in the 10th inning against Tampa Bay Rays.

--Oakland Athletics right-hander Edwin Jackson, appearing for his record-tying 13th major league club, allowed one run on six hits in six innings in an afternoon start against the Detroit Tigers.

Jackson struck out seven and was not involved in the decision. His appearance tied the record set by former reliever Octavio Dotel.

Along with promoting Jackson, the A's activated left-hander Ryan Buchter from the disabled list, optioned outfielder Nick Martini to Triple-A Nashville and designated right-handed pitcher Liam Hendriks for assignment.

--No. 1 overall draft pick Casey Mize and the Detroit Tigers have agreed to terms.

The Tigers announced the agreement with the right-hander shortly before a news conference at Comerica Park. Mize worked out on the field with Tigers players before attending the news conference.

According to multiple reports, Mize will receive a $7.5 million signing bonus -- less than the record $8 million Pittsburgh gave to 2011 No. 1 pick Gerrit Cole, but a record for a Detroit draft pick. The Detroit Free Press was first to report the amount of the signing bonus.

--Baltimore Orioles infielder Tim Beckham was activated from the 60-day disabled list before the team's game against the Seattle Mariners after missing two months with a groin injury.

In corresponding moves, left-hander Donnie Hart was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk and infielder Luis Sardinas (left ankle sprain) was transferred to the 60-day DL.

The 28-year-old Beckham last played April 23 at Cleveland before being placed on the disabled list with a groin strain and undergoing core surgery. Beckham entered the day batting .179 with one home run and four RBIs in 23 games this season, his second with Baltimore.
