The Lincoln College Baseball team is in Florida this week to begin their 2018 campaign and things are off to a wild start. On Monday, The Lynx played a double-header against ASA Brooklyn (NY) and managed a split thanks to an incredible, come-from-behind win in game two.

Lincoln lost game one to Booklyn 4-2. Sophomore Alex Phillips (Fairview Heights) took the loss despite a strong effort on the mound. Phillips lasted 5 1/3 innings giving up just two hits and one walk. All four runs given up to Brooklyn were unearned.

Sophomores John McGee (Starkville, MS) and Jalen Jones (Belleville) lead the offense with multiple hit games.

“We played well overall in the first game,” said LC Coach Tony Thomas. “Our defense committed five errors and that was the difference.”

Game two seemed to be going in a similar direction to game one as the Lynx went into their final at bat trailing 6-0. However, the Brooklyn relief pitcher, who had thrown a scoreless sixth inning, lost his command of the strike zone in the final frame. In all, he issued five walks and hit two batters to help Lincoln get on the board and begin to gain momentum. The eventual game-tying run scored on a passed ball.

Lincoln would then complete the comeback when, with the basses empty and one out, freshman Devin LaSanska took first base after being hit by a pitch. LaSanska would move to second after the Brooklyn pitcher committed a balk then score on a single between third and short off the bat of freshman outfielder Trey Mattix (Montecello).

Sophomore pitcher Aron Hopp was credited with the win.

Coach Thomas was proud of the way his team kept battling to get this win. “We were down early, but we had some of our best at bats during this unexplainable come from behind walk off win,” he said. “But, hey, that’s baseball.”

LC continues their spring trip with a double –header against vs Macomb CC (MI).
