Spring roundup: Sale sharp as Red Sox edge Twins

[March 15, 2018]  Left-hander Chris Sale struck out seven in five scoreless innings as the Boston Red Sox posted a 2-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday at Fort Myers, Fla.

Sale allowed two hits and didn't issue a walk during his second start of the spring. He has given up one run and four hits and struck out 12 with no walks in nine spring innings.

Mookie Betts had a run-scoring single in the second inning and Mitch Moreland homered in the third to give the Red Sox a 2-0 lead. Logan Morrison lined an RBI single in the seventh for the Twins.

Cardinals 3, Astros 1

Matt Carpenter hit a two-run homer and Luke Voit added a solo blast as St. Louis defeated Houston at West Palm Beach, Fla. Astros right-hander Justin Verlander served up both homers while giving up three runs and eight hits over five innings.

Orioles 7, Yankees 4

Adam Jones and Jonathan Schoop each hit two-run homers to help Baltimore defeat New York at Sarasota, Fla. Erik Kratz homered for the Yankees.

Braves 5, Phillies 3

Preston Tucker homered and had three RBIs and Rio Ruiz delivered a two-run single as Atlanta defeated Philadelphia at Kissimmee, Fla. Jorge Alfaro homered for the Phillies.

Marlins 5, Mets 1

Dan Straily allowed four hits over five scoreless innings and Derek Dietrich smacked a two-run single as Miami beat New York at Jupiter, Fla. Ty Kelly walked with the bases loaded in the ninth for the Mets' run.

Rays 9, Pirates 3

Kean Wong had three hits and Micah Johnson and Brandon Lowe each homered as Tampa Bay rolled past Pittsburgh at Bradenton, Fla. Eric Wood went deep for Pittsburgh.

Indians 7, Angels 0

Corey Kluber allowed a hit and a walk in five scoreless innings as Cleveland blanked Los Angeles at Goodyear, Ariz. Matt Shoemaker tossed five innings of one-run ball for the Angels.

Brewers 11, White Sox 3

Ryan Braun hit two of Milwaukee's five homers as the Brewers downed Chicago in Phoenix. White Sox starting pitcher Carson Fulmer was pounded for seven runs in 1 2/3 innings.

Diamondbacks 7, Reds 3

Zack Greinke exited after one inning due to groin tightness, but Arizona defeated Cincinnati in Scottsdale, Ariz. Scott Schebler and Tucker Barnhart homered for the Reds. David Peralta hit two doubles and drove in two runs for the Diamondbacks.

Royals 7, Cubs 6

Frank Schwindel hit a solo homer and a two-run double, leading Kansas City past Chicago in Surprise, Ariz. Anthony Rizzo drove in three runs for the Cubs.

Mariners 5, Giants 4

Taylor Motter had three hits, including a tiebreaking single in the eighth inning, as Seattle beat San Francisco in Peoria, Ariz. Buster Posey went 2-for-3 with an RBI single for the Giants.

Dodgers 11, Rockies 6

Enrique Hernandez hit a three-run homer and a two-run double, powering Los Angeles past Colorado in Glendale, Ariz. Rockies starter Jon Gray gave up five runs on six hits in four innings.
