Spring roundup: Vlad Jr. belts walk-off homer in Montreal

[March 28, 2018]  Vladimir Guerrero Jr. found the spotlight Tuesday in the stadium where his father starred.

The Blue Jays prospect belted a walk-off homer with two outs in the ninth inning to give Toronto a 1-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals at Olympic Stadium in Montreal.

Guerrero, who will open the season with Double-A New Hampshire, went deep to left-center field off Jack Flaherty.

Toronto starter Joe Biagini threw five scoreless innings, while St. Louis' Luke Weaver and Miles Mikolas threw three shutout frames apiece.

Red Sox 4, Cubs 2

Hector Velazquez tossed four scoreless innings and earned his third win of the exhibition season as Boston beat Chicago at Scottsdale, Ariz. Red Sox catcher Christian Vazquez had two hits, including an RBI single in a two-run fourth.

Astros 8, Brewers 1

Carlos Correa hit a first-inning grand slam as the defending World Series champions crushed Milwaukee at Minute Maid Park in Houston. Nick Franklin had one of the Brewers' four hits and drove in their lone run with a single in the seventh inning.

Tigers 2, Rays 1

Cam Gibson hit a go-ahead double in the seventh inning to lead Detroit to a win over Tampa Bay at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. Jacob Faria threw six scoreless innings for the Rays, striking out five before exiting with a no-decision.

Pirates 5, Phillies 5

Pittsburgh scored four in the top of the first inning and Philadelphia answered with a four-run fifth as the teams played to a tie at Clearwater, Fla. Adrian Valerio hit a game-tying homer in the top of the ninth for the Pirates.

Mariners 5, Rockies 3

Daniel Vogelbach had two hits, including a three-run homer in the top of the eighth, as Seattle topped Colorado at Scottsdale, Ariz. DJ LeMahieu had two doubles and drove in one run for the Rockies.

Indians 3, Diamondbacks 3

Trevor Bauer struck out seven in five innings, and Mike Napoli added a sixth-inning solo shot as Cleveland played Arizona to a draw at Chase Field in Phoenix. The Diamondbacks tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single from Drew Ellis and a fielder's-choice groundout from Kristopher Negron.

Twins 3, Nationals 1

Ehire Adrianza homered in the seventh and Minnesota added two runs in the ninth to beat host Washington at Nationals Park. Gio Gonzalez threw three scoreless innings for the Nationals, who were limited to two hits in the loss.

Giants 3, A's 0

Chris Stratton fired five scoreless innings, and six Giants pitchers combined on a six-hitter in a win over Oakland at AT&T Park in San Francisco. Matt Joyce went 2-for-3 for the A's.

Dodgers 4, Angels 3 (five innings)

The home team emerged with a win when the game was called due to a plumbing leak that spilled sewage onto the field in the bottom of the fifth inning at Dodger Stadium. Yasiel Puig and Matt Kemp homered for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Los Angeles Angels starter JC Ramirez allowed four runs on eight hits in 3 2/3 innings.

Reds-Rangers, canceled

The scheduled game between Cincinnati and Texas at Globe Life Park in Arlington, Texas, was canceled due to inclement weather.
