Major League Baseball roundup: Springer goes 6-for-6 in Astros' win

[May 09, 2018]  George Springer lashed a career-high six hits, including a three-run home run, and Marwin Gonzalez capped a six-run fourth inning with a two-run homer Monday night, helping the visiting Houston Astros pull away from the Oakland Athletics early en route to an 16-2 victory in the opener of a three-game series.

Springer finished 6-for-6 to become the first Astro ever to collect six hits in a nine-inning game. The only other time a Houston player produced a six-hit game was when Joe Morgan went 6-for-6 in a 12-inning game against the Milwaukee Braves on July 8, 1965.

Springer paced a 20-hit offense by collecting his eighth home run of the season, his ninth double and four singles. He scored four runs and drove in three. The six-hit game was the second in the majors this season. Andrew McCutchen had six hits, including a walk-off, three-run home run, against the Los Angeles Dodgers last month.

Dallas Keuchel (2-5) got a measure of revenge against the team that bombed him in an April start. He threw eight innings of one-run ball, taking advantage of more run support than he had enjoyed total in his five losses this season.

Nationals 8, Padres 5

Matt Adams hit two homers and drove in five runs, and two Nationals with ties to San Diego played prominent roles as visiting Washington topped the Padres.

San Diego State product Stephen Strasburg (4-3) held the Padres to three runs on six hits over seven innings. The right-hander struck out five and walked one.

Nationals shortstop Trea Turner, who was a top Padres prospect before going to Washington in a three-team, 2014 trade that brought Wil Myers to the Padres, homered and scored three runs in his first game ever at Petco Park.

Phillies 11, Giants 0

Odubel Herrera bombed two home runs, and four pitchers combined on a six-hitter, propelling Philadelphia to a rout of visiting San Francisco. The Giants had their four-game winning streak snapped.

Cesar Hernandez and Carlos Santana also homered for the Phillies, who scored 10 or more runs for the third time this season, to reward the strong pitching of Zach Eflin (1-0) and three relievers.

Eflin allowed four hits over 6 2/3 innings. He walked three and struck out nine. Zac Curtis, Seranthony Dominguez and Yacksel Rios worked the final 2 1/3 innings for the Phillies, allowing two hits and one walk while completing the club's fourth shutout of the season.

Mets 7, Reds 6

Adrian Gonzalez hit two homers for New York, which raced out to a big early lead and hung on for a win at Cincinnati.

The Mets snapped a six-game losing streak. The Reds have lost six of seven and have the worst record in baseball at 8-27.

The Mets finished with four homers, including a leadoff blast in the first inning by Michael Conforto. Jay Bruce, who spent the first eight-plus seasons of his career with the Reds, hit a two-run homer in the third inning. Billy Hamilton, Eugenio Suarez and Scooter Gennett went deep for the Reds.

Cubs 14, Marlins 2

Chicago slugged four home runs -- two by Ian Happ -- and snapped a season-worst five-game losing streak, defeating visiting Miami.

Happ finished with five RBIs. Javier Baez, who also homered and had three RBIs, left the game due to a groin injury. Kris Bryant, who had the other Cubs homer, went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs.

Chicago's Kyle Hendricks (3-2) allowed just six hits, no walks and two runs in eight innings. He struck out three while producing the longest outing by a Cubs pitcher this season.

Twins 6, Cardinals 0

Rookie Fernando Romero struck out nine in six shutout innings, leading Minnesota to a victory at St. Louis.

Robbie Grossman, Bobby Wilson, Eddie Rosario and Max Kepler each had RBI doubles for the Twins, who have won four in a row. That was more than enough for Romero (2-0), who allowed three hits and three walks.

Cardinals starter John Gant (1-1) surrendered four runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Rangers 7, Tigers 6

Isiah Kiner-Falefa hit a two-run double, Jurickson Profar knocked in the go-ahead run with a triple, and Texas rallied from a four-run deficit to defeat visiting Detroit.

Nomar Mazara had two hits, including a homer, and two runs, and Delino DeShields also scored twice for Texas. Jose Leclerc (1-0) gave up an unearned run in one inning of relief while picking up the win. Keone Kela pitched the ninth for his seventh save.

Leonys Martin hit a two-run homer and scored twice for the Tigers, while Nicholas Castellanos had three hits, a run and an RBI.
