Bathroom design is a key element in a home and
some say it is one of the first areas homebuyers evaluate when
looking into purchasing a home.
Such emphasis is not surprising. Surveys have shown people spend the
equivalent of one-and-a-half years in the bathroom over their
lifetime. So having a nice and comfortable bathroom is important.
If you want to make your bathroom nicer, you do not have to spend a
lot of time and money. By simply decorating your bathroom, you can
make it less mundane and more luxurious.
Ideas for sprucing up the bathroom might include:
-
Different lighting such as ambient lighting, bright and focused
lighting for cosmetic or shaving purposes, or energy-efficient
solar light tubes to provide natural light in rooms that have no
windows.
-
Added storage space for towels and washcloths using floating
shelves, wooden crates, wire baskets, or woven baskets.
-
Mirrors over the sink and vanity. A mirror in a unique style
adds an even more decorative touch.
-
A
vanity, small dresser, or chest of drawers provides extra
storage space for bath supplies.
-
An
accent wall that has a brighter color than the neutral tone on
the rest of the walls.
-
Bold or bright paint or wallpaper.
-
A
decorative shower curtain.
-
A
clawfoot tub.
-
Pretty soap dishes and other accessories that add color.
-
Big, fluffy towels.
Many DIY videos suggest a variety of ways to add
features and functions that can make the space less drab or
outdated.
Isabella Larue of Engineer Your Space Bathroom shares remodeling and
decorating ideas that “won’t break the bank.” Larue adds a
backsplash above the vanity, a new lighting fixture she created out
of wood and plexiglass, a storage cabinet over the toilet, and a few
basic decorations.

Your bathroom may just need a makeover and if you have a guest
bathroom used by a lot of people, you want it to look nice.
Denise Cooper of bemyguestwithdenise shows how her guest bathroom
got a “much-needed makeover.” Her husband removed the towel bar,
toilet paper holder, medicine cabinet, and the vanity, then put up
new drywall.
The makeover gives the bathroom a “fresh and clean and bright” look.
They used swan white paint on the walls to make the windowless room
seem taller. For the shelf hung over the toilet, they paint the wood
white and the metal gold. The shelving can provide both storage and
decorative touches. In this case, the shelf is used for hand towels,
bath salt, bath spray, a ceramic container with dinner napkins for
guests to dry their hands on. Décor includes an artificial planter
and a gold tin.
As far as bathroom lighting, there are many
different types. Cooper uses a golden bronze wall light with a
crisscross design, crystal accent, and fabric sheet to give the room
a “warm glow.” A brass wall sconce with a crystal orb helps set off
the other accessories.
A round hand towel holder, gold plated light switch, white vanity
with gold and acrylic handles, a basin with a “sweeping bowl design
for that contemporary look,” a gold faucet, an acrylic and gold
towel bar for bigger towels complete the look in the guest bathroom.

Unique and nonconventional décor can also spruce up a bathroom. This
décor may include using chalkboard paint on one wall, photos and
drawings around the room, or a rustic ladder to hang towels or place
accessories on. Use a sliding barn door to provide another unique
touch. Instead of drapes, use screens in front of windows or for
dividing space. Paint the tub to add a touch of color. Use decals on
the shower door for another decorative touch.

In addition to having bathroom that looks nice, it is also a place
some like to relax and feel pampered. One way that can be
accomplished is by making the bathroom feel like a spa.
Fluffy towels and a bathrobe can help recreate the spa experience.
Décor such as plants, rocks, baskets with lotion and beauty
products, candles, bath salts, a diffuser with oils, a tray or jar
filled with bars of soaps, and a string of lights can provide a
peaceful and relaxing atmosphere.

Though you may want your bathroom to be tranquil, it is hard to feel
relaxed if your bathroom is unorganized or full of clutter.
Space-saving containers throughout the bathroom can help with
organization.
In the shower, plastic bins with suction cups to mount on the wall
can provide more storage space for shampoo, shower gel, and other
items, and adhesive hooks can hold a loofah.
Wire baskets mounted on the walls can hold pretty soaps that provide
a decorative touch.
To organize the counter, clear off everything but the products you
use everyday and then put them on a tray to make the counter look
nicer.
Items under the sink can be organized using command hooks hung on
the back of the cabinet to hang cords from.
The cabinet drawers can be organized by using drawer dividers and
ice cube trays.
