[November 14, 2018]  The Illinois Fighting Illini had several opportunities to take a big win over a quality non-conference opponent, but the Georgetown Hoyas staved off the Illini 88-80 at the State Farm Center.

Critical turnovers at crucial junctures, some bad shot selection at times, and missed free throws are just a few of the reasons that led to Illinois’ demise.

The Illini got off to a great start leading early 10-3 but the Hoyas fought back to take a 39-37 lead at half time. Illinois did lead late in the game by as many as four points but Georgetown overtook them and the Illini missed multiple chances to capitalize.

The Illini placed five players in double figures Tuesday night. Freshman sensation Ayo Dosunmu led the way scoring 25 points.

Kipper Nichols and Andres Feliz both tallied 13 and Giorgi Bezhanishvili and Da’Monte Williams chipped in 12 and 11 respectively. James Akinjo led Georgetown in scoring with 19 points.

With the loss the Illini slip to 1-1 on the young season. Next up is a trip to Hawaii to face the No. 3 ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs on Monday in Maui.
