LINCOLN

Effective immediately, Illinois American Water has issued a boil water order for all customers in the company’s Lincoln District.

The boil order is necessary due to a power outage at the water treatment plant in Lincoln. Loss of power Sunday night caused technical issues in the production process and have caused water pressure to decrease. Some Lincoln customers may be experiencing no water, according to company officials.

As a result of the boil order, all customers in the company’s Lincoln District should bring their tap water to a rolling boil for five minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. Water is OK for bathing, washing, or other common uses. The boil order is expected be remain in effect for approximately 36 hours while a series of water quality tests are conducted throughout the Lincoln District water system. The boil order is being issued in accordance with Illinois EPA regulations. Anytime water pressure drops below 20 pounds per square inch in any part of a community water system, a boil order must be issued as a precaution to protect customers.

As a result of low and decreasing water pressures, all customers in the Lincoln District should use tap water for only essential purposes until further notice.

• Filling bathtubs; limit showers

“We appreciate your understanding and patience,” said Gabriel Bowden, Operations Superintendent, Lincoln District. Bowden added that Illinois American Water is working closely with the City fire department to ensure fire protection during this temporary interruption in water service.
