Report on stolen vehicle abandoned, suspect remains at large

[October 06, 2018]  LINCOLN  - On October 5, at approximately 3:23 pm, Atlanta Police Department and Logan County Sheriff’s Office units were requested to assist the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office in locating a suspect involved in the theft of several vehicles. At approximately 4:42, Logan County Deputies made contact with the suspect who was driving a vehicle determined to be stolen from Sangamon County. Deputies attempted to initiate a traffic stop on that vehicle at which time the suspect fled resulting in law enforcement engaging in a pursuit of the suspect.

The suspect eventually crashed his vehicle in the 1600 block of 900 Street and fled the scene. Multiple law enforcement agencies were involved in the tracking of the suspect to include, Logan County Sheriff’s Office, Illinois State Police, and the Lincoln Police Department. The suspect, who was described as a light skinned, black male wearing a blue shirt, evaded capture in the heavily wooded area. A Nixle alert was issued to area residents describing the suspect and advising them to remain vigilant, secure their homes, and report any suspicious activity.

Law enforcement continued their search through the night following up on several citizens’ tips involving possible sightings of the suspect.

On October 6, 2018, at approximately 8:03 am, the Logan County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a stolen vehicle from a residence located a mile from where the suspect crashed the first stolen vehicle. The vehicle stolen from the Logan County residence was described as a 1991 Chevy extended cab pickup truck, blue and silver in color.

The suspect in not in custody at this time. We do not believe the suspect to be in the area at this time however; Logan County residents living in the rural Mt. Pulaski area are encouraged to be vigilant and secure all residences, buildings, and vehicles. Please contact the Logan County Sheriff’s Office if you become aware of any suspicious activity or see an individual matching the description of the suspect.
