The Atlanta Public Library will host two book groups during its
2018-19 program season. Participation is free, and books are
available at the Library. Atlanta Public Library community programs
are sponsored in part by a generous grant from the Illinois Prairie
Community Foundation Mirza Arts and Culture Fund.
The Worldviews Book Group meets monthly on Monday at 6:00 p.m. for a
light supper and discussion. This year, in keeping with the
Library’s overall annual theme of Celebrating Community, the
Worldviews group will read books that portray the many different
faces of community, some likely and some not so likely.
The first meeting will be on October 29, and will feature Jessica
Shattuck’s The Women in the Castle, a gripping novel set at the end
of World War II in a crumbling Bavarian castle that once played host
to all of German high society. Amid the ashes of Nazi Germany’s
defeat, Marianne von Lingenfels returns to the once-grand castle of
her husband’s ancestors, an imposing stone fortress now fallen into
ruin following years of war. The widow of a resister murdered in the
failed July 20, 1944, plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler, Marianne
plans to uphold the promise she made to her husband’s brave
conspirators: to find and protect their wives, her fellow resistance
widows.
