To the editor: A sad time for
our nation. One of the most violent weeks in our history since the
civil rights movement was just experienced. People who we thought
were silenced by successes of that era are back with a vengeance.
They think it’s okay to spew hatred for people of other faiths,
people of color, or people of other parties.
What words of comfort do we hear from our leaders? Probably ought to
have armed guards at our houses of worship. A statement condemning
the actions is issued. A day later the same rhetoric that triggers
fear in some and violence in others is shouted from a campaign
rally.

Fear begets hatred which begets violence. What are we
afraid of? People that are different? The major religions of the
world all worship the same God. We aren’t that different. Immigrants
come to this country full of hope just like our forefathers did. We
are closing up shop. Ignoring our role as a bright city on a hill,
we shun our allies and scare our own people. Children and families
1,000 miles away require a military force to turn them away (in a
few months). People of other parties aren’t the enemy.
God help us all.
