We have experts in a variety of aspects related to autism services, and we are thrilled to be able to share that expertise with the community during Autism Awareness Month (April). These sessions are free and open to the public. Advanced registration is required and seating is limited. AAC and Autism: An Introduction to LAMP

Tuesday, April 9th from 5:00pm – 6:30pm

This training will offer an introduction to the Language Acquisition through Motor Planning (LAMP) therapy approach. The goal of the LAMP approach is to give individuals who are nonverbal or have limited verbal abilities a method of independently and spontaneously expressing themselves through the use of voice output augmentative alternative communication (AAC). Participants will learn briefly about the key elements of the approach and how these elements influence the design of an AAC language system. Demonstration and video examples will be used throughout the class. This training is appropriate for SLPs, OTs, ATPs, educators, family members, and others who are interested in learning more about the LAMP approach. Please note, this is not a comprehensive LAMP training.

AUTISM 101

Autism 101 is designed to assist parents, extended family and friends in understanding Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Designed to be the first step in a family's journey to gain introductory ASD information, the program will benefit any family with a child who has been recently diagnosed with ASD. During the session, participants will learn: What Autism Spectrum Disorders are and how they affect individuals, Types of interventions that are available for Autism Spectrum Disorders, and Community resources available for parents, families and professionals living/working with individuals with ASD.

Autism and Sensory Processing Disorder

In this session you will learn about usensory processing disorder and how sensory difficulties impact children on the autism spectrum. This will be an open discussion to help you understand and manage your child’s sensory preferences and challenges. Additionally, we will focus on the developing a “sensory lifestyle” to help your child be successful throughout their daily routines.

Join us for this FREE workshop specifically designed for parents and caregivers of individuals with developmental differences who are experiencing challenging behaviors. This workshop is designed to provide a basic set of prevention skills for working with challenging behaviors. Topics will include: The ABC’s of challenging behavior, Creating a supporting environment, Positive interaction strategies, Avoidance of power struggles, Identifying triggers and signals, De-escalation strategies, Creating a family safety plan and Safety away from the home.

This is presented in conjunction with the Central Illinois Autism Association.

Make It Take It Sensory Bottles: How these can be used at home for calming and other engaging activities

Presented by Marybeth Arduini, Family Navigator, Easterseals Central Illinois and Malinda Radloff of Connected Pediatric Intervention.

Parents spend more time with their children than all of their teachers and therapist combined. Come learn some new ways to help your child while simultaneously having fun and connecting with other parents. This is an interactive, make it take it event. While the attendees are making their calming bottles, strategies to calm and engage your child in interactive play will be presented. This is presented in conjunction with Connected Pediatric Therapy.
