Mount Pulaski Chief of Police:
Understanding the laws of Right-of-Way at open intersections

[August 14, 2019]

On August 6th, 2019, a citizen of Mount Pulaski completed a Concern/ Complaint/ Issue form at the Mount Pulaski City Hall expressing concerns over open intersections near our Mount Pulaski schools.

This citizen has a legitimate concern over the ignorance (not knowing) of Right of Way laws/issues by the general public with regard to "open intersections". I wish to eliminate public ignorance with regard to this issue. Let us remain attentive as we approach ANY intersection at any time. Please keep your eyes open and drive "defensively". This should not be limited to just the City of Mount Pulaski as crops approaching harvest time limit sight on county intersections as well.

I am listing the Illinois Statute that is pretty self-explanatory regarding open intersections.

[to top of second column]

Article IX - Right-Of-Way:: 625 ILCS 5/ 11-901 Illinois Vehicle Code.

Vehicles approaching or entering intersection. (a) When 2 vehicles approach or enter an intersection from different roadways at approximately the same time, the driver of the vehicle on the left must yield the right-of-way to the vehicle on the right.

I encourage any citizen of Mount Pulaski to attend future Mount Pulaski City Council meetings with any concerns and possible solutions to any problems with regard to the safety of our children.

As your Chief of Police, I wish to be a proactive "problem solver" when concerns of this nature are brought forth.

[Anthony L. West Chief of Police]
