[August 29, 2019]  LINCOLN - A group of area students began their studies to become Certified Nursing Assistants at Heartland Community College Lincoln with the help of the Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital Foundation.

Five Logan County students are recipients of an ALMH Foundation education grant to fund studies in the Heartland Community College Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program.

The program prepares individuals to function as nursing assistants in nursing homes, hospitals and private homes. Instruction focuses on basic nursing knowledge and skills required to care for patients. Fall semester classes for the CNA program began August 19.

Since 2013, the ALMH Foundation has given $380,000 in grant funding to students pursuing careers in healthcare. The CNA education grant is new to the Foundation’s program this year and looks to help address the growing need for nursing assistants in Logan County, particularly at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital.

“The Foundation Board is committed to building a talent pipeline for the Hospital,” said Sarah Helm, Executive Director of the ALMH Foundation. “At the root of this program is the partnership with local donors to the ALMH Foundation. Their investment in local students will empower the community.”

The Nursing Assistant Certificate program at Lincoln began in January of 2019. The students who received ALMH Foundation education grants are: Stevie Andersen, Heidi Huskins, Gina Gasparin, Lyndsie Gilmore and Johnny Kearney. An additional grant recipient, Alisha Armstrong, will attend classes at Lincoln Land Community College.
