Ever wonder what 7,000 Christmas cookies all in one place would look
like? Well, here’s a hint. For some of us the thought of this many
cookies would be simply overwhelming, but for the volunteers at the
Humane Society of Logan County, no task is too daunting when raising
money to support orphaned animals in our community.
Each year the Society hosts a cookie fundraiser, first taking
advanced orders for a couple of weeks ahead of time, then on the
Saturday pick-up day, they also host a cookie walk. At the walk
guests can come in and choose from what is left over to fill their
own boxes.
This year, the advanced sales equaled more than 500 dozen cookies
ordered. On Friday almost every table at the Lincoln Masonic Lodge
hall was filled with containers holding two, three or more dozen
cookies.
For the volunteers, step one to getting organized is to divide the
cookies into categories and place all like-cookies on the same
table. This way as the volunteers later go around to each and every
table selecting a cookie or two, they are able to assure buyers that
they are getting the best variety possible of all that was
available.
Then when all the first step organizing is done, the next step is to
fill boxes according to the number of orders placed, and the
quantity requested in each order. Advance orders were taken in three
dozen or five dozen per order. These white bakery boxes sat waiting
for the time when volunteers would grab them up and make their way
around the numerous tables gathering up cookies.
Among the cookies that will be distributed are some fun decorated
cookies such as these round cookies that are decorated like Santa’s
jolly jelly belly.
You can’t have Christmas cookies without a gingerbread man or two
right?
Candy cane cookies are also a must on the Christmas cookie list.

And, do you see what we see? It looks like someone couldn’t resist grabbing one
of these adorable Christmas trees. Or, may for some reason the baker thought
that missing cookie was less than perfect and not good enough for these special
boxes.
Even as the tables were filled and overflowing, more cookies were arriving.
Just a few of the cookie varieties that will be going into boxes. Also, what is
left over is going to be sold today during the cookie walk.
In addition to cookies there will be lots of other sweet treats for shoppers to
choose from at the cookie walk today, Saturday. These pieces are absolutely
precious, and would look stunning on any holiday table. We also saw some fancy
little cupcakes in the background.
If holding true to history, the sale today will also feature some other great
items such as cinnamon rolls and home baked breads.
The sale starts at 8:30 a.m. this morning and will wrap up around 1:30 p.m. If
you ordered in advance, you have a lot to look forward to when you pick up your
box or boxes today. If you forgot to order, there will still be plenty to choose
from, so be sure to check it out.
The sale is being held at the Lincoln Masonic Lodge hall on North Kickapoo
Street in Lincoln. All the cookies and baked goods have been donated to the HSLC,
so the money you spend will go directly to assisting the HSLC in their daily
operations of the no-kill shelter in Lincoln.
