LINCOLN
Saturday, February 2nd Groundhog Day, Punxsutawney Phil did not see
his shadow, an indication of an early spring heading our way. In
Lincoln, the short bursts of sunshine on Saturday and warmer temps
also gave reason to hope, especially after a week in the sub-zero
deep freezing - all good incentives for folks to get out and enjoy
the annual Zion Lutheran Pancake and Sausage Breakfast.
The breakfast held in the gymnasium at Zion Lutheran School in
Lincoln is an annual tradition that some folks will find a way to
get to regardless of the weather. However, around the room, many
were commenting how they were happy to see a bit warmer temperature.
That warm feeling caused by the weather was matched the warmth
inside as guests enjoyed the limitless stacks of pancakes
side-dressed with the popular Zion Sausage links.
Crowds came early and enjoyed lots of food, shopped the silent
auction and placed generous bids on some outstanding items, and
literally bought out the bake sale, with only a few items remaining
by the mid part of the day.
Auction items this year were top notch as guests had the opportunity
to bid on numerous gift baskets, high end kitchen appliances and
house wares, home décor, fun snack baskets and a really great
recliner donated by Jakes Furniture in Lincoln.
The best part of the day though is the opportunity to reunite with
old friends and make new ones. At one table, a couple who had come
from Missouri for this weekend visited with another couple who have
lived in the area many years. They shared the commonalities of
knowing the same people in Logan County, being connected through
friendships and familiarity with local landmarks.

Volunteers made their way around the room with plates of pancakes,
bowls of sausage and pots of coffee. Refills for all were very
popular.
As always, the event was manned by volunteers who were happy to chat
a minute as they brought out food and drinks, and the servers in the
main line had smiles on their faces as they served up hundreds of
pancakes.
The annual meat sale also went well with volunteers carefully
counting and calculating, would they have enough to provide the
buyers with what they wanted. After a late morning inventory, they
decided that there was a good chance they would have just enough to
serve all those who might want to purchase meat to take home for
future use.
The annual breakfast is a fundraiser for the school. Being a private
parochial school, Zion Lutheran does not receive the same government
funding as public schools. The money earned at breakfast helps to
support programs and events for the students.
For Logan County, the breakfast is the first really big event of the
new year, and it is very well attended, perhaps for that reason.
After a harsh late January, cabin fever may have set in, and the
chance to get out and enjoy good food and company was just what the
doctor ordered.
