The Lincoln College Women’s Basketball team fought to the bitter end against #23 Indiana University Northwest, but in the end suffered a two-point defeat which snapped the team’s five-game winning streak.

The Lady Lynx did not get off to a strong start as they trailed the Red Hawks by as many as 15 points in the first half at 31-16. Lincoln managed to turn up the heat defensively and force a series of turnovers late in the second quarter which helped cut the IU-Northwest lead to 33-24 at halftime.

Lincoln carried the positive momentum gained at the end of the first half over into the second half as they outscored their opponents 20-to-13 in the third quarter to reduce the deficit to just two points. In the final quarter, LC continued to battle, but was never able to capture the lead and had to settle for a 61-59 loss.

Sophomore forward Kaliea Montiero (Rockford) continued to play at a high level for her teammates, leading them in points scored with 14 and rebounds with 12. Nautica Preston (Chicgao) and Hannah Cameron (Lincoln) each had 12 points for the Lady Lynx. Cameron made it a double-double performance by pulling down 10 rebounds as well.

“We were down early, and I am proud of how we responded,” said LC Head Coach DeRonte Polite. “We had plenty of opportunities to take control of the game, but we turned the ball over too many times. Even when you shoot as well as we did, it is hard to overcome turnovers, especially playing away from home.”

Coach Polite was positive about his team’s accomplishment despite coming away with a loss. “Overall, we went toe-to-toe with a top 25 team on the road, and went 1-1 with them in our season series; so my message to our team is that we belong here. We have shown that we belong in the NAIA.”

LC (15-13) will play their final game of the season on Saturday at Silver Lake College. Tip-off is set for 1:00 PM.
