Top 25 roundup: No. 3 Virginia gets past No. 20 Virginia Tech

[February 19, 2019]  Kyle Guy scored 17 of his 23 points in the first half, but No. 3 Virginia needed a strong second-half stretch to defeat No. 20 Virginia Tech 64-58 on Monday night in Blacksburg, Va.

Ty Jerome added 16 points and De'Andre Hunter had 10 points for visiting Virginia (23-2, 11-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), which moved a half-game behind first-place Duke in the conference. Guy had a team-high seven rebounds.

Virginia broke a second-half tie with a 14-4 run for a 48-38 edge with 11 minutes left in the game, then got another 8-9 run to put the game away.

Kerry Blackshear Jr. poured in 23 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, and Ahmed Hill added 16 points for Virginia Tech, which lost for the third time in five games. The Hokies (20-6, 9-5) also got 11 points from Nickeil Alexander-Walker.

No. 22 Wisconsin 64, Illinois 58

Brad Davison had 18 points and seven rebounds to help the Badgers escape the Illini in Big Ten play at Madison, Wis.

Khalil Iverson added a season-high 16 points and collected nine rebounds for Wisconsin (18-8, 10-5 Big Ten). Star Ethan Happ had just six points and three rebounds, but the Badgers were still able to defeat the Fighting Illini for the 15th straight time.

Ayo Dosunmu scored 13 points and Aaron Jordan added 12 for Illinois (10-16, 6-9). Giorgi Bezhanishvili had 10 points as the Illini saw their season-best, four-game winning streak come to an end.

No. 23 Kansas State 65, West Virginia 51

The Wildcats used a big second-half run to pull away from the Mountaineers at Morgantown, W.Va., in the process moving a full game ahead of Texas Tech and Kansas in the Big 12 Conference with five games remaining.

Kansas State (20-6, 10-3 Big 12) was led by Barry Brown's 21 points and Xavier Sneed's 19 points. Dean Wade, who was not expected to play because of a foot injury sustained Saturday in a loss to Iowa State, had 10 points and six rebounds.



WVU Coliseum had been a house of horrors for Kansas State, which was 1-5 all-time there entering Monday's game against West Virginia (10-16, 2-11). The Mountaineers got 16 points from Lamont West plus 11 points and 13 rebounds from Derek Culver.
