[January 03, 2019]  ATLANTA - Weldon B. "Cork" Cheek, 90, of Atlanta, passed away on Wednesday, December 26, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at his home.

Visitation: 10 a.m. Monday, December 31, 2018,  at the Atlanta Christian Church.

Service: 11 a.m. Monday at the church

Obituary

Weldon B. "Cork" Cheek, 90, of Atlanta, passed away on Wednesday, December 26, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at his home.

Funeral services for Mr. Cheek will be Monday, December 31, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at the Atlanta Christian Church. Dr. LC Sutton will officiate. Burial will follow at Atlanta Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the church.

Weldon Blaine Cheek was born July 3, 1928, in Atlanta, the son of Walter and Garnet Buss Cheek. He married Billie Joan Baldwin on March 9, 1952 at Fort Rucker, Alabama. She survives.

Weldon is survived by his wife, Billie, and sons Ric Cheek and Kip (Debbie) Cheek; grandsons Cameron (Kate) Cheek, Coady (Ashley) Cheek, and Chase (Allie) Cheek; step-granddaughters Tonia Phalen, Becky (Ryan) Pelka, and Kim Phalen; and two great-granddaughters: Charlotte and Isla.

Weldon was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Sharon Cheek and Michael Cheek; and two sisters: Betty Horn and Shirley Thomen.

Weldon graduated from Atlanta High School in 1946. He served in the Korean Conflict from 1950 until 1952. Following his military service, he completed five years of plumbing schooling and retired from his business in 1995.

Funeral Director

In 1960, Cork became a member of the Atlanta Volunteer Fire Department, of which his father was one of the founders. In 1969, he was elected Fire Chief by members of the department and was re-elected to that post every year thereafter until 1978. In 1979, he was appointed as Chief by the City Council, retiring from the department in 1990.

He served as Little League Coach for many years and as Cubmaster of the Cub Scouts, Past Master of the American Legion, Past Master of the Atlanta Masonic Lodge, and Past President of Atlanta Rotary. Cork had also been a Member of the Atlanta Library Board, member of the Abraham Lincoln Hospital Board of Trustees, member of the Logan County Sheriff's Merit Board, member of the Atlanta City Council, member of the Bloomington Consistory and Peoria Shrine. He was also a member of the Atlanta Christian Church.

Memorials may be made to the Atlanta Fire Department or Atlanta Rescue Squad.
