The large casual meeting room at the Guesthouse Coffee and Pastries in Lincoln was filled to capacity last Thursday as Illinois Representative Tim Butler paid a visit.

Butler hosted an open forum meeting to hear from constituents about matters of concern in the Lincoln and Logan County community. Butler will host a similar meeting in September in Atlanta.

August 10
Generations, a long-term nursing facility in Lincoln was recently placed on the Telligen's National Nursing Home Quality Care Collaborative Honor Roll. Ranked in the top 10 percentile of facility measured by Tellegin, the Generations facility in Lincoln was recognized as being among those that have"made the most improvements in a wide list of criteria."

Telligen’s honor roll grades skilled nursing facilities on how well they follow recommendations that can help residents improve their mobility, lower the volume of medications they need, use medical data more effectively, prevent return trips to hospitals and more.

August 11

Hayes-Krell Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH) Chapter 159 Senior Vice Commander Peter Dowding and Auxiliary president Melanie Schaler place a purple heart-shaped wreath at the All Veterans Park Monument in Lincoln on Tuesday evening. The Hayes-Krell MOPH hosted a memorial service at the park on the official Purple Heart Day this past Tuesday, Aug. 7th, with members of the community, many also veterans, in attendance.

At the Monday, August 6th meeting of the Lincoln City Council aldermen passed a resolution that paves the way for the city to purchase the empty lot east of the current city hall/fire station. Fire Chief Mark Miller brought the request to the city a few weeks ago, saying that the seller had come down considerably on the asking price and the city should be able to purchase the property for $70,000, about half the original asking price.

Miller said while there were no immediate plans to build a new fire station building, this lot would be the first step in a long-range plan. That plan may include building a department annex building that would be large enough to house the city's firefighting apparatus.

During the talks about this property Mayor Seth Goodman said that while his real estate agency had at one time been involved with this property that was no longer the case. Therefore he assured the aldermen that he nor his business would stand to gain anything from the sale of the property to the city.

August 13

Ella Bobbel (above center) goes up against her sister Claire (left) and Reed Naugton for Grand Champion Barrow at the Logan County Fair. At the local fair, Claire won out taking the Grand Champion Barrow with her white and black Crossbreed. However, Ella had her day over the weekend at the Illinois State Fair. She and her Crossbreed barrow took the Grand Champion Barrow statewide! Congratulations to both Bobell girls, who did a terrific job with their animals this year!

August 14

On Saturday, August 11th, 2018, Melanie Schaler received notification from the President of Military Order of the Purple Heart Auxiliary that she was among the top five recruiters in the United States for the 2017-2018 year. Melanie serves as Auxiliary President of Chapter 159 of The Military Order of the Purple Heart that serves central Illinois. The Auxiliary is made up of spouses, parents, siblings, children and grandchildren of Purple Heart recipients. The organization has over 7,500 members who serve not only the Purple Heart recipients, but all veterans through numerous charitable programs.

On Monday, crews from Matthews Construction in Lincoln were busy working on adding features to Lincoln's new Fitness Mat. The Mat is being installed on Eight Street in the corner of the lot that once housed the old Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital. The Fitness Mat is a collaborative effort between the city of Lincoln that owns the lot, and Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital Community Health Collaborative. A grand opening ribbon cut and launch party are planned for 9 a.m. Thursday, August 16th. The public is invited to attend.
