[January 31, 2019]    The Minnesota Twins finalized a one-year contract with free agent left-hander Martin Perez on Wednesday, the team announced.

Financial terms weren't disclosed, but multiple media outlets reported that Perez's deal is worth $4 million. He will get a $3.5 million salary in 2019, and the club holds a $7.5 million option, with a $500,000 buyout, for 2020.

Perez, 27, became a free agent when the Texas Rangers paid him a $750,000 buyout to avoid paying him $7.5 million for 2019.

He went 2-7 with a 6.22 ERA in 22 appearances (15 starts) last season. Perez fell and broke his non-pitching elbow in December 2017 while trying to avoid a charging bull at his offseason home in Venezuela. The injury bothered him into the 2018 campaign.

Overall, Perez is 43-49 with a 4.63 ERA in 141 career appearances (128 starts) over parts of seven seasons, all with Texas. He missed large parts of 2014 and 2015 after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

Perez is expected to join a rotation that includes right-handers Kyle Gibson, Jake Odorizzi and Jose Berrios and possibly right-hander Michael Pineda, who is coming back after missing a year due to Tommy John surgery.

The Twins created a spot for Perez on the 40-man roster by designating right-hander Chase De Jong for assignment. De Jong, 25, went 1-1 with a 3.57 ERA in four starts for Minnesota last year. He broke into the major leagues with the Seattle Mariners in 2017, going 0-3 with a 6.35 ERA in seven games (four starts).
