Atlanta United's Martinez called to Argentina national team

[March 08, 2019]    Atlanta United midfielder Gonzalo Martinez was called up to Argentina national team duty Thursday, giving him the opportunity to create on offense with Lionel Messi.

 

It will be the third call to the national team for Martinez, 25, who joined the MLS champions in January from River Plate of Superliga Argentina. Martinez does have one goal in two matches with the national team.

Argentina has scheduled friendlies this month with both Venezuela and Morocco in advance of Copa America participation this summer. In addition to Messi, Martinez will have the opportunity to team with Paulo Dybala, Angel di Maria and Nicolas Otamendi on the Argentina national team.

Martinez has made four appearances in an Atlanta United uniform, with three of them in Concacaf Champions League action. Martinez played 89 minutes in Atlanta's 3-0 defeat at Monterrey (Mexico) on Wednesday, getting the team's only shot on goal.
