The 2019 Mount Pulaski Hilltoppers made Senior Night a memorable one on Friday night. Mount Pulaski and Warrensburg-Latham were caught up in a pitcher's dual at Veteran's Park as Drew Martin was on the mound for the Hilltoppers versus Jackson Cook for the Cardinals.

With no score going into the bottom of the seventh inning and the Hilltoppers batting, the home team definitely held a slight edge. But with two quick outs recorded by Jackson, it looked like the game could be headed to extras. A two-out walk to Lucas Kuhlman started the seventh inning rally for the Hilltoppers.

Todd Kelly then followed up with a perfect bunt down the third base line and with runners on first and second the Hilltoppers Drew Martin stepped into the batter's box. The right-handed hitting sophomore wasted no time jumping on the first pitch and driving it to deep center just off the glove of the Cardinals centerfielder. Kuhlman came racing home for Mount Pulaski with the winning run. The Hilltoppers win 1-0 on Senior Night over Warrensburg-Latham.

Tanner Farris was credited with the win for Mount Pulaski. Farris tossed one-third of an inning of shutout baseball. Drew Martin started the game for the Hilltoppers and he threw six and two-thirds innings, allowing zero runs on five hits. Martin struck out eleven batters and allowed one walk.

Jackson Cook suffered the loss for Warrrensburg-Latham. Cook tossed six and two-thirds innings. He gave up one run on two hits and struck out seven batters. Joey Young pitched in relief of Cook.

Todd Kelly led Mount Pulaski with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate.

Garhett Allen was 2-for-4 for the Cardinals at the plate.

2019 MPHS Baseball Seniors ~ Tanner Farris, Logan DeRight, Jonathan Shehorn, Ben Fricke and Ian Schneider

This is win no. 20 on the season for Mount Pulaski. According to senior catcher Ben Fricke, this season's win total equals that of the last three seasons for these boys. Their freshman year they won four games. Their sophomore year they improved to five wins. And last season as juniors this group finally hit double-digits in wins with eleven.

Head Coach Joel Washko has been through the struggling years with the boys and this season is one that everyone has looked forward to for quite some time. "Twenty wins is a great accomplishment for this group and I am especially happy for our seniors," said Washko. "They have given so much time to this program with the intent of getting it to a place where it really hasn't been for a long time. These five seniors have been there for the good and bad and they have fought hard for four years to turn things around. I can't tell you how great it is to see how much fun they are having this year. They mean so much to this program and they have earned everything they have got. They all are also outstanding individuals from great families. They still have bigger goals they want to accomplish this year, but I know that they will be successful in their future endeavors and I look forward to seeing what they all achieve."

The Hilltoppers record is 20-4. Mount Pulaski will start regionals on Wednesday.
