MLB notebook: Tommy John surgery for White Sox's Rodon

[May 14, 2019]  Chicago White Sox left-hander Carlos Rodon will undergo Tommy John surgery on Wednesday with the procedure likely sidelining him through the first half of the 2020 season.

In addition, White Sox right-handed reliever Nate Jones underwent season-ending surgery on Monday to repair a flexor tear in his pitching forearm.

Rodon, 26, went on the injured list on May 2, one day after feeling elbow tightness while giving up three runs and five hits in 3 2/3 innings against the Baltimore Orioles. He was torched for eight runs and nine hits in three-plus innings in his previous turn against the Detroit Tigers.

Overall, Rodon was 3-2 with a 5.19 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 34 2/3 innings over seven starts this season. He is 29-31 with a 4.08 ERA in 93 appearances (90 starts) over five major league seasons.

--The New York Yankees placed two more players on the 10-day injured list -- infielder Miguel Andujar (right labrum tear) and right-handed pitcher Jonathan Loaisiga (right shoulder strain).

Andujar was just 3-for-34, with no extra-base hits, since returning from the injured list because of the labrum injury. He previously missed 28 games.

Loaisiga was originally scheduled to start the Monday night series opener. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that Loaisiga will not throw for at least the next four weeks.

--Philadelphia Phillies right-hander David Robertson was instructed not to throw for three weeks in an attempt to give the flexor strain in his right elbow more time to heal.

The order not to throw came during a second opinion with noted orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews. Robertson last pitched on April 14 and is expected to miss at least one more month if not longer.

"David feels more comfortable after this most recent diagnosis and feels more confident," Phillies manager Gabe Kapler said before Monday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers. "It was a good news visit from our perspective."

--Minnesota Twins designated hitter Nelson Cruz was scheduled for an MRI exam on his left wrist.

The six-time All-Star was injured on a swing and miss during Sunday's 5-3 loss to the Detroit Tigers.

Cruz, 38, is hitting .270 with seven homers and 22 RBIs in 35 games this season. He signed a one-year, $14.3 million deal with Minnesota in January, joining his fifth team in 15 seasons.

--The Boston Red Sox pulled second baseman Dustin Pedroia from his rehab assignment due to what the team called "minor left knee soreness."

Pedroia, who remains on the 10-day injured list, was scratched from the lineup before a rehab game at Double-A Portland on Saturday, which was supposed to be the first of three consecutive games for the veteran as he works through issues with his troublesome left knee.

Portland's game Sunday was rained out. He had played in five rehab games at Portland from May 2-9, collecting four hits in 16 at-bats.

--The Oakland Athletics designated veteran first baseman/designated hitter Kendrys Morales for assignment and activated outfielder/first baseman Mark Canha from the injured list.

Morales, 35, was batting just .204 with one homer and seven RBIs in 34 games for Oakland.

Morales has 212 homers, 735 RBIs and a .267 batting average in 13 major league campaigns. Canha, who has been sidelined with a sprained right wrist, batted .200 with two homers and four RBIs in 18 games before going on the injured list in late April.
