Logan County Sheriff Mark Landers reports on damage from Thursday morning storms

[May 23, 2019] 

LINCOLN 

On Thursday, May 23rd, 2019 at 12:25am, the National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Logan County. At 12:29am, the National Weather Service issued a Tornado Warning for Logan County. The Logan County Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Management also released a Nixle Alert at this time advising Logan County residents to take shelter immediately.

At 12:35am Logan Dispatch began receiving numerous reports of downed trees and power lines in communities along the Interstate-55 corridor to include, Elkhart, Broadwell, Lincoln, Lawndale and Atlanta.

Additional reports included:

-A grain bin was found nearly intact that had been blown onto the railroad tracks on State Route 121 near Bell Station.

-A vehicle struck a tree in the roadway in the 2000 block of State Route 121. No injuries reported

-A box truck was overturned on Interstate-55 at mile post 138 south bound. No injuries reported.

-Approximately 15 power poles were reported down on North street in Middletown running west into Menard County.

-Over 4,000 residences were reported without power due to the storm, as of 4:00am according to Ameren.

Deputy Chief Matt Vlahovich stated City Police and Lincoln Streets and Alley personnel, along with Lincoln Fire Department, worked together to barricade areas where there were downed power lines and trees. These areas were barricaded and cleanup will not commence until daylight for safety reasons. Residents are encouraged to use extreme caution while walking or traveling due to the downed power lines and debris across and along several roads and alleys.

Sheriff Mark Landers would like to commend all of the law enforcement personnel, Emergency Management, fire fighters and dispatchers who worked together during this severe weather event.

At the time of this release, no injuries stemming from the severe storm have been reported.
