Tonight is the night Railer basketball fans have been waiting for since March. The Lincoln Railsplitters begin the 2019-20 basketball season as hosts of the Lincoln/Eaton Thanksgiving Round Robin Basketball Tournament. This year’s tournament features eight teams in two pools with Lincoln scheduled to tip-off tonight at 7:30 p.m. versus Cahokia.

Fans got a first look at the 2019-20 Railers in action Thursday night as the players scrimmaged against one another. Coming off a 27-5 record last season, this year’s squad returns four starters - in seniors Kaden Froebe, Will Ewald, Kameron Whiteman - and junior Dylan Singleton.

Coach Neil Alexander has a solid bench to choose from for that fifth starter this year, but it’s a good bet it will be junior Landon Hullinger. Hullinger filled in for Jermaine Hamlin last season and was the leading scorer on the Sophomore Team. Juniors Seth Tungate and Adam Grunder will also most likely see considerable varsity minutes this season.

No matter who is in the lineup for the Railers, fans can expect to see a fun and fast game on the court. It’s no surprise the list is long as far as long range shooters go for the Railers, but fans who became accustomed to Hamlin’s high-flying dunks last season won’t be disappointed this year.

In warmup's Thursday night several of the Railers were “throwing it down.” Between Froebe, Ewald and Hullinger, fans will be jumping out of their seats when these guys take flight. Tungate at 6’0 has some hops too. Again, this team will not short-change fans on excitement.

Even Coach Neil Alexander had to smile when asked about the fun season ahead.

“I think we will have a good year, but we’ve got to make sure we keep working to get better and stronger,” said Alexander. “I think we’ve got some kids that can shoot the ball and we’ve got a lot of kids that could be the leading scorer on a given night. They’ve played together forever, so as far as being selfish or anything, we don’t have to worry about that. It’s gonna be a fun year. We only want to do one thing and that’s play as hard as we can to the best of our abilities and that’s all you can ask of them.”

This year’s Lincoln/Eaton Thanksgiving Round Robin Tournament features two pools:

Green Pool

Belleville Althoff
Cahokia
Lincoln
Springfield

Red Pool

Mahomet-Seymour
Champaign Centennial
Danville
Limestone

The tournament runs all week long, with the exception of taking Thanksgiving Day off. The championship game of the tournament will take place at 8 p.m. on Saturday night.
