The Lincoln College Women’s Volleyball team ran their current winning streak to six-in-a-row on Friday evening with a four set victory at Lindenwood-Belleville University (NAIA). The win improved Lincoln’s record to 14-6 on the season.

Junior libero Megan Gilliam’s serve was a key to the Lady Lynx opening set victory. Gilliam, a graduate of Waterloo High School, served four straight points late in the set to extend Lincoln’s lead from 20-17 to 24-17. During the run, she was aided by blocks from junior middle hitter Kayla Battle (Aurora) and senior right side Elysa Smith (Metamora). Smith also recorded a kill off a set assist from fellow senior Emma Derry (Augusta). Lincoln eventually won the set 25-18.

Set two turned out to be a see-saw battle as Lincoln took command early to stake themselves to a 12-3 lead. However, the tables would eventually turn when LBU found a groove and went on a 9-0 run to storm back and claim a 17-15 lead. Back-to-back solo blocks by LC’s Amazing Ashby (Aurora, CO) and Elysa Smith stopped the bleeding and tied the score at 17-17. The Lady Lynx then regrouped and managed to regain enough momentum to survive the set with a 25-22 win.

In set three, the two teams traded the lead several times up to a 15-15 tie score. LBU managed to win three of the next four points to go up 18-16 and then protected their slim lead the rest of the way to earn a 25-23 win which extended the match.

In the fourth set, the score remained close throughout the early going, but a 5-2 run by Lincoln College that featured two kills by outside hitter Hannah Cameron (Lincoln) and an ace serve from senior Kaylyn Hoffert (Lincoln) put LC up 18-14. From there the Lynx were able to cruise to a 25-20 win to end the match.

Hannah Cameron led the Lady Lynx in kills with eleven. Kayla Battle was next with eight and Elysa Smith had five. Morgan Lolling (Lincoln) and Emma Derry were again nearly even in set assists. This time Lolling edged out Derry 19 to 18 in total assists for the match. Amazing Ashby led in total blocks with eight and Megan Gilliam recorded a team-high 13 digs.

“Tonight’s win was a real team effort,” said Lincoln Head Coach Mark Tippett. “Our offense was well-balanced and defensively we were in the right places most of the time. Our serving was more consistent and accurate than that of our opponents tonight which helped us to keep the pressure on them and keep momentum on our side.”

Lincoln is off until Friday, October 4th when they will make a return trip to the St. Louis area to take on Harris-Stowe University at 7:00 PM.
