Take a walk in Kickapoo Creek Park and enjoy a beautiful stroll with all sorts of natural beauty. Take a walk through Kickapoo Creek Park with a guide like park superintendent Joe Funk and hidden wonders will appear.

Recently, Joe pointed out a paper wasp hive that was truly a work of art. “It did not take them long at all to make it,” he said. The hive is filled with wasp eggs. “Don’t bother the wasps and they won’t bother you,” he said.

He then mentioned a large crop of Illinois bananas. Illinois what? Well, they are also known as paw paws. “There has been a large crop this year, one of the largest I have seen in a long time,” he said.

Wait until they fall off the tree, and they are edible. The fruit is soft and sweet.

Kickapoo Creek Park has all sorts of wonders, if you know where to look. Check out the unusual bird roosting high in a tree along the road. It is a creation of artist Moses Pinkerton, a sculpture that seems right at home.

Nature and man can create a melding of art in a beautiful setting.
