Girls on the Run of Central Illinois welcomes the community to join
them for the Girls on the Run “Rock Your Star Power” 5k presented by
Memorial Medical Center. This non-competitive run/walk will be held
on Saturday, November 9 at Lincoln Land Community College in
Springfield, in celebration of the 350 Girls on the Run fall program
participants.
More than 350 third through eighth grade girls at 29 central
Illinois schools and community sites are participating in the Girls
on the Run and Heart & Sole curricula, which focuses on teaching
self-respect and healthy lifestyle choices. The program season ends
with the 5k event that celebrates their training. The event is open
to the entire community. Family, friends, and community supporters
of all ages and abilities are encouraged to register to run or walk
the course with the girls.
Along with the program participants, their volunteer coaches will
also participate in the 5k run/walk. There are 115 volunteer coaches
who gave their time this season to ensure all girls in central
Illinois are prepared for a lifetime of healthy living and
self-respect. Total 5k turnout is expected to be 750 runners
and an additional 1,000 family members and friends cheering on the
girls.

Girls on the Run is an international, non-profit prevention
program that prepares girls ages 8-13 to run 3.1 miles and educates
them about healthy physical, emotional, and social lifestyles. The
program empowers girls at an early age to prevent the display of
future at-risk behaviors, giving girls greater self-confidence, a
stronger sense of identity, a healthier body image, and a better
sense of community. |
