The Lincoln College Women’s Volleyball team came up just short in their bid to win both home matches played on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Lynx started the day with a three-set sweep of St. Mary-of-the-Woods College (IN) then lost a heartbreaker in five sets to the College of the Ozarks.

Against St. Mary’s, LC was able to use a balanced offensive attack and efficient passing to control the tempo of play for most of the match and won it by scores of 25-23, 25-13 and 25-22. Senior right side hitter Mikayla Seibert (Mackinaw) led the LC attack with 11 kills. Outside hitter Kaylyn Hoffert (Lincoln) was good for six kills while Amazing Ashby (aurora, CO), Kayla Battle (Aurora) and Hannah Cameron of Lincoln each recorded five kills. Setter Morgan Lolling (Lincoln) had 21 set assists in the match while fellow setter Emma Derry (Augusta) had 15. Megan Gilliam shined once again on defense collecting a team-high 29 digs from the libero position.

Lincoln then took on the College of the Ozarks (MO) for the fourth time this season. LC claimed victory in their first two meetings, but lost to COFO in four close sets in the most recent contest. This time, the match was once again evenly played by both teams. In set one, Ozarks came out on top 25-22, but Lincoln regrouped and took charge in set two for a convincing 25-16 win to even the match. The Lady Lynx continued to play well in set three to win it 25-18. However, in set four, COFO toughened up their defense and denied Lincoln’s bid to end the match with a 25-19 victory. In the deciding set to 15, Ozarks continued to frustrate LC’s hitters and find ways to win the longer rallies on their way to a 15-9 win which ended the match.

Junior middle hitter Kayla Battle (Aurora) was Lincoln’s leader in kills against Ozarks with 12. Senior right side hitters Elysa Smith (Metamora) and Mikayla Seibert each had 11 kills. Emma Derry and Morgan Lolling were nearly even in set assist totals with Derry edging out Lolling by one with 28 assists to Lolling’s 27. Junior Megan Gilliam again led in digs with 25.

“We played very well for six and half straight sets today,” said Lincoln Head Coach Mark Tippett. “but we faded at the wrong time and good teams will make you pay for that, which is what Ozarks did to us today. We had some great matches with them this year, which I am sure will make us a better team for the post-season,” he added.

The results of Saturday’s play moved Lincoln’s record on the year to 23-12. Lincoln will host their final match of the regular on Tuesday, November 5th at 7:00 PM against Lincoln Christian University. The Lady Lynx will honor their senior players prior to the start of the match.
