The Lincoln College Softball team and coaching staff spent Saturday, September 7, hosting the program’s first-ever softball youth clinic and Gift a Glove event. Approximately thirty children ages kindergarten through 4th grade learned basic fielding, throwing, and hitting skills at this free event. In addition, free used gloves, bats, and other equipment were given out to every child that desired one through donations from the Gift a Glove program. Louie the Lynx also made an appearance at the event to take photos with the kids.

Lincoln College players served as coaches and mentors to the participants at the event and all reported having a positive experience.

LC sophomore Bryanne McBride said. “It was a great experience getting to teach them game of softball and the fun times that come with it.”

Freshman Kiya Hagene agreed, “I really enjoyed working with the kids and they were so well-behaved. It was a lot more fun than what I expected, and I can’t wait for them to come back next year!”

Head Coach Boyd Nowicki was happy with the result of the day. “I feel the clinic was a huge success, and I also think that our team learned just as much from our campers as they hopefully learned from us,” said Nowicki. “It's always good to give back to the sport that you love to help grow the game. Collegiate softball has grown so much over the past ten years, and some of that is due to experiences like this that help instill the love for the sport in young players.”

Coach Nowicki went on to explain that one of the goals of his program is to promote a family environment and that events such as the Gift a Glove program are designed to extend that presence into the surrounding community. Coach Nowicki hopes to be able to bring more events such as this one to campus in the near future.
