Stress Response & Laughter

[April 02, 2020]   Why are people making fun of and poking jokes at the current situation we are in? Most of us have had that thought at some point.

The saying goes, “If I don’t laugh, I’ll cry or laughter is the best medicine.” Behind the memes and jokes is people doing what they can to feel better.

Realize that most people are not taking this crisis lightly but find that joking around lightens the heart and mind. There is scientific proof that laughter is good for our mind-body and it activates our body’s natural relaxation response and releases your own feel good hormone, oxytocin.

When you are in a constant state of fear or anxiety, the body is flooded with harmful chemicals that will decrease your immune system.

Here’s some simple tips to bring more joy into your day and reduce the stress response;

Start your morning with a funny video and share it with your friends.

Practice laughter yoga, there are several free videos on YouTube.

Take time each day to laugh at yourself and realize that we will not run out of toilet paper.

Post funny memes or read the cartoons.

Give yourself and others permission to laugh and be playful because we are ALL in this together.
