Is Easter magical thinking?

[April 03, 2020]  There is so much magical thinking in the world and always has been. Is the Easter story filled with magical thinking?

Some might think so since going from dead to alive in our day and age is either an act of science we aren’t able to prove or it’s some sort of mythology that came from the era before scientific explanation.

Either may be true, but let me ask you this question: Does it matter? And if so, why? Some of us have the kind of faith that it matters that it is an actual fact, an event in history that “really” happened. Four accounts of history and other historical evidence in scrolls, ancient writings and in the Holy Lands are enough “proof”. People who have this sort of faith have looked in the “magicians hat”, seen no rabbit and exclaimed, “We believe!”

Then, there are others who, well, shall we say question, doubt or maybe even deny that Jesus rose from the grave. This group looks at the historical, cultural time period, analyzes the lack of real evidence, and thinks there must be something that happened, scientifically that is, that no one really knows. There are so many possibilities that may have been factors as to how someone might have seemed to “rise from the dead”. And yet. . .they still call themselves Christian and shout on Easter morning, “We believe!” How can both groups be celebrating Easter?

Because, it’s not really about the “WHAT” that happened over 2000 years ago, it’s about the “Why”. Easter is about what happens in life every single day: chaos is put into order, destruction is rebuilt, death is celebrated and we who believe know that our spirits will live into eternity, even if we don’t know exactly how. The how and what doesn’t matter. We believe because we have experienced the reasons why belief matters. We need not fear the Covid19 virus, the flu, cancer, or death because of our beliefs that all that live can be transformed by faith. Whether you believe Easter to be magical thinking or not, I invite you to be an Easter person. . .remember you, too, can transform whatever is wrong into all things good, and live in gratitude. Once you believe, you will understand why! Happy Easter!
