Illinois State Police (ISP) Division of Training and Recruitment (DTR) Col. Timothy Tyler presented an overview of the use of force training received by cadets and ISP Troopers to a group from Black Lives Matter (BLM), Springfield. Additionally, Col. Tyler and other members of the (ISP) Academy Training Bureau invited the members of BLM, Springfield to experience the new Multiple Interactive Learning Objectives (MILO) /Use of Force Simulator.

The new MILO Firearms Use of Force Simulator delivers safe and realistic training options that allow ISP trainees to effectively train in both the use of firearms and less-lethal, use of force options. This simulator includes high definition (HD) and 4k videos that provide immersive, role-playing scenarios which require the “trainee” to choose the appropriate response based on the totally of the scenario’s circumstances.

“Police officers make split-second decisions every day in order to effectively protect the public. It is extremely vital, that our officers are trained to this capacity and know how to effectively de-escalate situations when possible,” said ISP Col. Tim Tyler.

“Likewise, it is extremely important to know which appropriate action is required in order to maintain officer and public safety. Education is important not only for those we train but also for the public and those we protect.”

BLM, Springfield representative Sunshine Clemons stated, “We appreciate the Illinois State Police for their commitment to creating an ongoing relationship with Black Lives Matter, Springfield. The purpose of creating such a relationship is to work toward the mutual goal of improving the relationship between our community and law enforcement. Part of that goal is to create an environment of learning, accountability and improvement. Our organizations learning from each other during this training shows our mutual commitment to the work to be done.”

As part of their ongoing training, all ISP Troopers must complete Control and Arrest Tactics (CAT) training four times a year on a quarterly basis.

The ISP has four MILO Firearms/Use of Force Simulators located across the state in Chicago, Pesotum, Springfield and Belleville.
