Eye Spy, Week Three
Mount Pulaski

[August 17, 2020]    Last week during our Eye Spy adventure we sent you not to a singular location, but to a community.

The city of Mount Pulaski is one of our dearest and most historical communities with strong ties to Abraham Lincoln. At one time early in Logan County history it was the county seat for a few years. The Mount Pulaski Courthouse was not one of our clues last week as it would have been a little too obvious.

Nonetheless, that courthouse is a beloved centerpiece in the downtown area that draws several hundred visitors each year from near and far. The courthouse features its original wood flooring on the second level courtroom. For many the thought that today one may stand on the very same floor same as it was where Lincoln stood during such famous trials as the case of the cast iron tombstone is amazing and sometimes a little overwhelming.

Clues last week included buildings with dates on them. The town is old and historical but still welcomes change. The community understands that history is invaluable to all of us. At the same time it embraces the changes that keep the town vital and current.

Another clue was a segment from a mural on the outside wall of the Market of the Hill. View the mural and read the historical account of the great airplane versus train race that occurred in Mount Pulaski.

There are sites to see while remaining outside, but there are also great places to go inside. The Mount Pulaski Township Genealogical and Historical Society is home to a gigantic collection of items from the history of the city as well as military and Abraham Lincoln. Upstairs at the Society is a wonderful museum that takes you back in time with a vintage kitchen, parlor, a replica of a one room school house and much more.

There are also shopping opportunities, such as Jules, which is much more than a flower shop. Be sure to go inside and check out all that she has to offer. Salt Creek Attic is also a popular stop in Mount Pulaski with tons and tons of hand crafted items made locally.

Market on the Hill is new to the community. It is a community owned co-op food store that features locally grown produce and meats. Visit the deli for a quick sandwich to eat at the courthouse lawn. Or, if you want to have a sit down meal, the Old Brickyard offers outdoor seating and some terrific food and drink.

So, while we have stressed that the Eye Spy game is a place to go to stay outside, going inside if you wish will offer rewards all its own.
