Obituary

On Saturday, December 5, 2020, William Doyle Johnson, loving husband and father of three children passed away at the age of 94.

William was born on August 9, 1926 in Braidwood, to Henry and Lillie Johnson.

He served in the U.S. Army before returning to Lincoln to spend the rest of his life.

William worked 40-plus years at the bottle factory with his brother James. He also spent time as a truck driver and a taxi driver in the Lincoln area.

In retirement, William spent a great deal of time as the “Fifth Street Waver,” which is how he earned the reputation for being the unofficial “Lincoln Town Greeter.”

Along with rooting for his beloved Chicago Cubs, William’s greatest enjoyment was seeing friends, neighbors and fellow residents drive by and return his waves and smiles.

William was preceded in death by his father, Henry, and his mother, Lillie, along with his brothers Henry, Rob, and Charlie.

He is survived by his wife Dorothy, his brother James, his three children, Scott, Kevin, Kristi, and six grandchildren, Andrew, Sammy, Robert, Elizabeth, Kaile, and Tristan.

The funeral service will be Thursday, December 10, 2020 at New Union Cemetery on Cobblestone Avenue and Broadwell Drive at 1:30 p.m.

Flowers or donations may be sent to Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home, 127 S. Logan St., Lincoln, IL 62656.
