Spring training roundup: Twins' Berrios impresses

[February 24, 2020]  Minnesota ace Jose Berrios made his spring debut by striking out four and walking none in two scoreless innings in a 5-5 tie with the visiting Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday at Fort Myers, Fla.

Berrios went 14-8 last season with a 3.68 ERA to help the Twins capture their first American League Central title since 2010.

Minnesota shortstop Ehire Adrianza and right fielder Jimmy Kerrigan each had two hits, as did Toronto designated hitter Rowdy Tellez.

Nationals (ss) 2, Astros 1

Designated hitter Yan Gomes and backup first baseman Brandon Snyder had two hits apiece for the host Nationals at West Palm Beach, Fla. Snyder had the game-winning RBI single in the ninth.
 


Orioles 11, Red Sox 5

Left-hander Wade LeBlanc gave up one hit in two scoreless innings and catcher Bryan Holaday homered for the host Orioles at Sarasota, Fla. First baseman Josh Ockimey homered for Boston.

Rays 9, Yankees 7

New York third baseman Miguel Andujar hit a home run but the host Rays prevailed at Port Charlotte, Fla. Tampa Bay's Randy Arozarena had a two-run triple in the eighth.

Phillies 4, Pirates (ss) 3

Right-hander Aaron Nola surrendered three hits in two scoreless innings for the host Phillies at Clearwater, Fla. Jay Bruce delivered a two-run double in Philadelphia's four-run first.

Tigers (ss) 8, Pirates (ss) 4

JaCoby Jones opened the game with a home run off left-hander Derek Holland as the visiting Tigers won at Bradenton, Fla. Holland fanned five and allowed two runs in 1 2/3 innings.

Tigers (ss) 5, Braves 1

Right-hander Ivan Nova allowed two hits in two scoreless innings for the visiting Tigers at North Port, Fla. Detroit's Jordy Mercer had a two-run single in the first.

Mets 3, Cardinals 3

Harrison Bader led off the game for St. Louis with a home run off Steven Matz at Port St. Lucie, Fla. Adam Wainwright allowed a run and two hits in 1 2/3 innings. Jake Marisnick homered for New York.

Marlins 5, Nationals (ss) 2

Adam Eaton had two hits but the visiting Nationals fell at Jupiter, Fla. Washington's Jacob Wilson and Miami's Monte Harrison and Christian Lopes also had two hits apiece.
