Creating happy pet playgrounds

[June 15, 2020]  When Peter Cohen bought his California home in 1988 he basically inherited two feral cats already living on the property. Feral cats are un-owned domestic cats that live outdoors and avoid human contact.

After one of the feral cats was killed by a car and the other one was hit badly by a car but survived, Cohen began to adopt cats from shelters all over California in order to keep the injured cat company. Once he started that, his world changed tremendously, or rather the cats' world. Adopting a couple cats turned into 15 rescue cats living with Cohen and his friends.

With the cats now making their home indoors, Cohen, a home builder, decided to construct the ultimate pet playground. By 1995 he had spent between $40,000 and $50,000 on catwalks that connect each room throughout the house. The cats enjoy chasing each other, sometimes in the wee hours of the morning, while Cohen says he finds the catwalks architecturally interesting. The house also features tunnels, platforms and perches for the cats to enjoy.

"The cats make the house feel alive," says Cohen.

The beauty of it all is breathtaking and the happiness benefit for all parties involved is infinite. It's really the ultimate pet playground right here. All other cats will drool at the lavish lifestyle of Cheesecake, Chocolate, Nutter, Butter, Crumple, Rumple, Cookie, Poppyseed, Cudo, Newie, Secret, Wasabi, Coffeebean and Donut.

"This is their house and we are living here with them." Manuel Flores adds in the video.

If this all doesn't make your heart explode, how about these final thoughts from Cohen, "We can't solve the world's problem but I can solve this tiny problem for these cats."

Update: Cohen now has 22 cats and he is making and selling catwalks to raise money to fight kitty FIP (Feline infectious peritonitis).

Man Turns His House Into Indoor Cat Playland and Our Hearts Explode

Don't let the cats get the upper paw, dog lovers. There are some pretty impressive dog cribs out there.

Take Barkingham Palace for example. Victoria tore down an old shed in her back yard and with the help of her father, the two of them created a two-story puppy palace complete with a balcony and a pool. "I love my dogs more than anything," said Victoria.

Now The Fuzz the Pomeranian, Marvin the Sheppard and Bruiser the Chihuahua live like royalty, with each one having their favorite spots in Barkingham Palace. The palace even features a mailbox for "paying the bills" and an old phonograph for "listening to music."

"They love it," added Victoria.

A four-year-old Chihuahua named Poncho also lives in luxurious quarters his dog mom had especially designed for him. She had a house built beneath a stairway just for Poncho's privacy.

Being a Chihuahua, Poncho gets a little nervous around large crowds of people, so his private Harry Potter-style bedroom under the stairs is perfect for his personality. It features a fancy bed, a chest of drawers, a piano, and even an oil painting. Nothing is too good for Poncho.

"He thinks he deserves it all, so I guess it's okay," says Poncho's mom.

Eggnog and Igloo are two Bulldogs who don't have to go far to find fun and relaxation. They live under their parent's bed in some pretty fancy and creative digs. There is a ramp "for easy access to cuddles" above and a "secret storage compartment for very important items" as in toys below and if they get thirsty in the middle of the night, there is a "built-in faucet for a convenient late night drink."

All of this is easy to maintain, while providing Eggnog and Igloo with a lot of "me time" or if they are in the mood to "party the night away" this undercover paradise is accommodating to those needs too. Talk about a couple party animals always ready to spread the holiday cheer. For a good time, call Eggnog and Igloo.

This next dog lover loves Beagles. He wanted to build his Beagle buddies Louie and Marie a playhouse and per Beagles fashion, they wanted to help. The Beagles were instrumental in overseeing everything from the digging of dirt to the moving of whatever needed moving. A sandbox and a ramp was constructed, with the dog's noses in every aspect of creating. The playhouse also features many pictures of Beagles. What Beagle doesn't love photos? A pool for cooling off and plenty of places for climbing also make this playhouse a paradise for this active and inquisitive breed. A real good time here.

"We don't deserve dogs, so don't dogs deserve to live in the lap of luxury?" asked the narrator, Mark.
