[March 06, 2020]  LINCOLN - Gladys Marie Elkins, 87, of Lincoln, passed away on March 1, 2020 at St. John’s Hospital with her loving family and friends by her side.

Visitation:  2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 8, 2020 at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln

Service:  10:00 a.m. on Monday, March 9, 2020 at Lincoln Christian Church

Obituary

Gladys Marie Elkins, 87, of Lincoln, passed away on March 1, 2020 at St. John’s Hospital with her loving family and friends by her side.

Gladys was born September 18, 1932 in Elkhart, the daughter of George Elwood and Virgie (Rhodes) Van Fossan. She married Stephen Bailey Elkins on March 15, 1952 in Lincoln. He preceded her in death on August 27, 2013.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, George and Loren Ray; and two sisters, Freda White and Ethel Overbey.

She is survived by one son, Stephen R. Elkins and one daughter, Dianna (Kevin) Hamblin all of Lincoln. Four grandchildren; Jamie (Joe) Wellbaum of Springfield, Jeremy (Kayophe) Hamblin of St. Louis, Candice M. Elkins of Lincoln and Colby (Felicia Najera) Elkins of Savannah, GA. Two great-grandchildren, Brooke and Michael Wellbaum of Springfield. Six sisters, Helen Hoagland, Laura Mae Molt, Margaret (David) Edwards, Rose Mary Musick, Sharon (Jim) Follis, and Jean (Harold) Boyer; one brother, Claude (Carla) Van Fossan all of Lincoln.

They also helped raise two children, Rhonda Chism of Pekin, and Donald Robertson of Chicago.

She graduated from Elkhart Community High School. She was a lifelong member of the Lincoln Christian Church where she taught kindergarten for 45 years; she was a member of the Beacon Sunday School class where she served as a President for one year. Served as a sponsor for the Heart Song Choir for seven years. Served on the committee for fundraisers for the Heart Song Choir and Good News Publishing groups at the church. She worked for Heights Finance for 25 years as a loan officer.

She was a foster grandparent at Zion Lutheran School for many years; and worked for the YMCA summer camp.

She was an avid fan of the Lincoln Railers. She served on the Lincoln Railer Boys Basketball Booster Club from 1969 until present where she served as President and Secretary for numerous years. She was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame.

Services for Gladys will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, March 9, 2020 at Lincoln Christian Church, Lincoln. Visitation will take place from 2:00-6:00pm on Sunday, March 8, 2020 at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln. Burial will follow the services at Harmony Cemetery in Beason.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Gladys’ name to the Lincoln Railer Boys Basketball Booster Club.
