[October 14, 2020]

On Friday, October 9, 2020, at about 10:10 p.m. Lincoln Police Units were dispatched to McDonalds, 1007 Hickox Drive, in reference to a male subject that appeared to be passed out in the handicap parking space. Lincoln Officers responded to find a male subject that appeared to be under the influence. When the subject was asked to step out of the vehicle he instead backed out, striking a curb, and losing a tire.

He then proceeded westbound on Woodlawn Rd to Malerich Dr to Herndon Dr and then South into the Walmart parking lot where he was surrounded by police officers.

Officers approached the vehicle and the subject indicated he was armed with a gun and was suicidal. Officers from the Lincoln Police Department and Logan County Sheriff’s office then setup a perimeter and made sure employees and residents in the area were notified of the danger. Lincoln Police requested assistance from the Illinois State Police for a negotiator.

After about a three hour standoff the subject was taken into custody peacefully and transported to a Springfield hospital for a mental health evaluation. No arrest or charges have been filed, but will be reviewed by the Logan County State’s Attorney office.

We cannot release the name of the subject, but he was not a Lincoln resident.

I would like to commend our officers and Logan Dispatch in protecting the safety of those businesses and making proper notifications to the area residents. Those notifications should be heeded due to the safety factor inherent in them. When people show up to watch what is happening, they risk their own safety and the safety of officers who must move them to safer locations.

I would also like to thank the Illinois State Police and the Logan County Sheriff’s office for their assistance in this matter. It is with great working relationships that we succeed in these types of incidents.
