The health of food workers is in jeopardy

To the Editor:

This week, agriculture writer Alan Guebert published a chilling account of Trump administration actions that have threatened the lives of workers at meat processing plants in central Illinois.

When it became obvious last spring that the virus was out of control in meat packing plants the Trump administration jumped into action to force packing plant workers - many of whom were sick from the COVID-19 virus -- back to work. This was done so that the plant owners could continue to profit from the workers' labors, despite the danger to the employees' health and well-being.

This is just another example of the failure of the Trump administration to take the COVID-19 virus seriously. As a result, the disease continues to isolate us from our relatives and friends and to seek shelter in the safety of home isolation. It has stolen a year of our lives.

[to top of second column in this letter]

Those of us who have had enough of the President's "if you like the mask feel free to wear the mask" nonsense know that 220,000 Americans did not have to die. We now realize that China, with four times our population, has lost fewer than 5,000 souls to the pandemic! Our economy is staggering while China's economy is running full blast. Chinese leadership proved its competence in the face of the virus. By contrast, our leaders failed miserably. Given China's success at handling the virus, we are asking why America should settle for less.

If you, too, have had enough there's something you can do about it. Vote for Joe Biden, a man who knows how to organize an effective response when America faces a crisis. He proved that in 2009 when he led our recovery from the Great Recession. Get to the polls and cast a vote for new leadership.
