Three deceased after Sunday morning Crash in rural Mason County
Two confirmed residents of Emden and San Jose

The Following Preliminary Information is Being Released by Illinois State Police District 9

WHAT: Two Unit Fatal Traffic Crash

WHERE: Illinois Route 136 west of County Road 3700 E., Mason County

WHEN: Aug. 15, 2021 at approximately 1:37 a.m.

VEHICLE:
Unit 1 – 2017 Blue Hyundai Elantra

Unit 2 – 2013 Black Chevrolet Cruze

DRIVER:
Unit 1 – Juvenile, 17-year-old male from Emden, IL – Deceased

Unit 2 – 30-year-old male from San Jose, IL – Deceased

PASSENGER:
Unit 1 – Pending identification and next of kin notification – Deceased

PRELIMINARY: A preliminary investigation indicates the following occurred: Unit 1 was traveling westbound on Illinois Route 136 west of County Road 3700 East. For unknown reasons, the driver of Unit 1 drove over the center line and into the path of Unit 2 traveling eastbound.

Both the driver and passenger of Unit 1 were pronounced deceased on scene by responding medical personnel. The driver of Unit 2 was also pronounced deceased on scene by responding medical personnel. The Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit (TCRU) is continuing the investigation. No further information will be disseminated at this time.
