[August 18, 2021]   Fifth-seeded Matteo Berrettini of Italy became the first player to reach the third round of the Western & Southern Open, rallying past Spain's Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-7 (5), 6-3, 7-5 on Tuesday in Mason, Ohio.

Berrettini registered the only service break of the second set for a 4-2 lead, and he recorded the only break of the third set for a 6-5 edge. Ramos-Vinolas failed to take advantage of five break points in the middle set, then had no break opportunities in the last set.

The only other second-round match saw France's Benoit Paire upset sixth-seeded Denis Shapovalov of Canada 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 in a contest that finished after 1 a.m. local time.

In first-round action, John Isner fired 26 aces while coming from behind to beat the United Kingdom's Cameron Norrie 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4.

The 36-year-old American is looking to extend a hot streak that has seen him advance to at least the semifinals in all three of his events since taking a first-round loss at Wimbledon.

Isner put 70 percent of his first serves in play and won 83 percent of his first-serve points. Norrie's first-serve rate was only 59 percent, but he prevailed in 93 percent of those points.

Next up for Isner is a matchup with 11th-seeded Jannik Sinner of Italy, who won the Citi Open in Washington two weeks ago.

The other U.S. players to earn first-round wins included Reilly Opelka, who edged French qualifier Corentin Moutet 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-4, and Sebastian Korda, who topped Serbia's Laslo Djere 6-4, 6-4.

Ninth-seeded Hubert Hurkacz started and ended well in a 6-1, 6-7 (3), 6-1 decision against Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov upset 13th-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain 6-3, 6-4 in a match that was interrupted by rain.

Dimitrov racked up 16 aces and no double faults while Bautista Agut had two of each.

"I am very, very happy," said Dimitrov, the 2017 Western & Southern Open champion. "He is such a tough opponent, but I served really well when I had to. It was good to finish a match in straight sets, I am just appreciating the moment."

Also earning first-round wins were Kazakhstan's Alexander Bublik, Croatia's Marin Cilic, France's Gael Monfils, Italy's Lorenzo Sonego and the U.S. pair of Frances Tiafoe and Tommy Paul.
