[December 03, 2021] The Lady Wolverines punched their ticket to the IESA 7th Grade Class 1A State Tournament on Wednesday night by defeating Morton Blessed Sacrament 30-12 in the Sectional 4 Championship hosted by West Lincoln Broadwell.

West Lincoln Broadwell ran out to a 9-2 lead at the end of one quarter of play. At halftime, the Lady Wolverines were on top 18-6. After three quarters, WLB was leaving no doubt in this one with a 24-8 lead. Morton Blessed Sacrament finally hit double-digits in the fourth quarter. WLB takes the win by a final score of 30-12.

Paisley Holmes led the Lady Wolverines with 21 points. She is a fifth grader.

WLB head coach Cory Farmer had great things to say about his young team after the win.

“Our 7th grade team is fearless,” said Farmer. “We start three 5th graders, a 6th grader, and my one 7th grader. We are very small. Every game we have played all year, the teams are always bigger than us. Wednesday night was no different. They were much bigger than us and a good rebounding team and I don’t have the rebounding stats but I would bet we out-rebounded them by 20 plus rebounds. Our girls are not scared of anything and are the hardest playing team I have coached. We got out to an early lead and never let them back in the game. Our press really frustrated Morton. They had a hard time getting the ball up the court.”

What an impressive win by a young group of ballplayers.

The winner will play at 6:30 p.m. later that night in the semifinals.

Congratulations and good luck on Saturday!
