The
West Lincoln Broadwell Lady Wolverines 8th grade team lost in the
sectional championship to Washington St. Patrick on Wednesday night
by a final score of 41-31.
The Lady Wolverines found themselves down 13-8 after the first
quarter of play. With just under a minute left to play in the second
quarter, WLB jumped in front 18-17 and they would take that lead
into the locker room.
St. Patrick came out strong in the third quarter and managed a 36-24
lead after six minutes of fast-paced action. The Lady Wolverines
outscored St. Patrick in the fourth quarter, but in the end WLB fell
by a final score of 41-31.
Lily Holmes led the Lady Wolverines with 14 points. Grace Schneider
hit double-figures with 11 points.
The Lady Wolverines played their hearts out against a tough and tall
group of St. Patrick ballplayers. WLB was playing without their
leading scorer and the sixth woman off the bench on Wednesday night,
according to Coach Cory Farmer. In addition, the team had not been
able to practice all week, with several girls out due to illness.
Some girls had just returned to school on Wednesday.
“The girls gave it everything they had, they just couldn’t breathe,”
said Farmer.
The Lady Wolverines also had to play the entire season without their
starting center, Marin Luckhart, who tore her ACL over the summer in
a basketball game.
