Tuesday morning shooting in
Lincoln leaves one dead, one in custody

On
Tuesday, January 19, 2021, at about 8:47 a.m., Lincoln Police Units
were dispatched to a residence in the 1400 block of North Ottawa St
in reference to a reported shooting. Lincoln Officers responded to
find a 77 year old male with a gunshot wound to the chest. Logan
County Paramedics and Lincoln Fire Department responded and
attempted to stabilize the male, but were unsuccessful and the male
died due to his injuries. The male was identified as John S. Yates.
The caller was Kathleen R. Yates, 67 years of age, who is the wife
of the victim. She was subsequently arrested for First Degree
Homicide, a Class X Felony offense. Preliminary investigation
indicates a domestic dispute that resulted in the discharge of a
firearm.

This investigation is still open and in progress by the Lincoln Police
Department and Illinois State Police. The arrest charges are merely allegations
and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. All
reports will be forwarded to the Logan County State’s Attorney for review.
