[January 22, 2021]  This year, LDN was excited by the number of entries we received in the pet contest for the Animal Stories Magazine. For the judges, choosing the winner in each category was a difficult, but fun task.

In the ‘Caught in the Act’ category there were 10 entries and all of them were fun to see and demonstrated the unique personalities of our pets. From the parrot drinking mom’s coffee to the “woof in sheep’s clothing,” a cigar toking pup and much more, all the entries were great and we appreciate everyone who sent in pics of their babies doing their thing.

The winner of the category was a kitty named Kevin. Kevin was caught by mom Kathy Baker tangled up in the Christmas tree, hanging upside down among the tinsel and lights!

Kathy and Keven won a $50 gift certificate presented by Bob Rankin, manager of the Big R in Lincoln. Kathy said that Kevin is a kitten still maturing and he is very active. He squirms a lot, and enjoys being in an upside down position. Even for the photo, he was having a hard time staying focused on the task at hand. There was just too much to see in the Big R and he was ready to go shopping!

The Cutest/Most Cuddly category had the most entries with 33. The majority of the entries were puppies or dogs and they were adorable. There were also some other unique pets such as bearded dragons. The cats and kittens were outnumbered by a long shot with only four entries. Even so the kittens were amazingly sweet, as were the dragons.

In the end a sweet little pup named Ike was the winner. The expression on Ike’s face in his entry picture may have been what melted the hearts of the judges as his pet parents did a great job catching a sweet moment in time.

When Ike’s pet parents came to Big R to collect their $50 prize they brought along Ike, and even then the expression on his face was priceless. Left to right are dad Dirk Aper, sons Rylan and  Devin holding Ike, mom Ashley and Big R store manager Bob Rankin.

Sarge, the Viking was the winner of the Dress Your Pet category. Sarge is a light colored Pug. He wore a cloth helmet with traditional Viking horns, matching fur and bright orange braids in his winning picture.

Sarge also wore his favorite outfit when he came to Big R to collect his winnings with pet parents Barry and Julie King. Sarge is a beloved pet that is aging a bit and so he might not be as ferocious as his picture, but he is a great dog, and a highly valued member of the King household.

Sarge did have some tough competition in the Dress your pet category. There were six entries including an adorable cat in pajamas, a “Wonder” poodle, a pup all decked out for Christmas, a lady showing off her bows and a wonderful western dressed droopy dog sheriff.

In the final category, Funniest Expression the winner was Jade, a calico kitten that lives up to the reputation of cats being curious. When a new toy given to a child in the family left behind an empty box, Jade had no choice, she had to crawl inside. When she realized she had been spied she took on a very wide-eyed look. Possibly she was wondering if she should bolt before being scolded or stand her ground and claim the box as the property of Jade.

Jade belongs to Bob Fulk and Tammy Elam. Bob said that Jade is a bit flighty and definitely does not like riding in the car, unlike her fellow housemate Lovie who goes everywhere with the couple.

Bob and Tammy decided it would be best to collect the $50 prize on Jade’s behalf and allow her to stay at home, perhaps playing in her box. Bob Rankin of Big R was pleased to present the $50 prize to Fulk and Elam on Jade’s behalf.

In the Funniest Expression category there were eight entries and all of them were great. The judges also had a tough time picking just one in this category.

The judging took place by ballot and it was a blind judging. The pets’ pictures were printed out with no names attached. Pictures were numbered and the judges then looked at the photos and voted on their favorite.

LDN wishes to thank all the pet parents who submitted photos for this year’s contest. The animals we got to see were just wonderful and we are sure that readers will find at least one or two that make them smile as well.

Also, a great big thank you to Big R in Lincoln for sponsoring the contest for 2021. It was a pleasure to work with Rankin and the fine folks at Big R. We hope all the winners will enjoy their shopping spree!
